There are two neighboring municipalities in Morris County, New Jersey that share similar names. “The Chathams” is what they are collectively known as, however Chatham Borough and Chatham Township are distinct in several ways. For example, Chatham Borough was settled in 1710, while Chatham Township wasn’t formed until 1806. The two share a school district, library, municipal court and a few other public services.

Schools include: Milton Avenue School, Southern Boulevard School, Washington Avenue School, Lafayette School, Chatham Middle School, and Chatham High School. The high school has been recognized with a Blue Ribbon School Award and in 2012 was ranked 20th out of the 328 public high schools in New Jersey. That was not the high school's first recognition, it was also ranked 12th out of 316 schools back in 2006.
